Welcome to the Economic Development Division of the Planning and Development Department.
The Economic Development Division of the Planning & Development Department is primarily responsible for managing business growth and expansion in Mount Holly. The Division also oversees the Business Incentive Grant Program, which provides cash grants, up to $15,000, for small businesses seeking to locate to Mount Holly or expand their current business within the city limits. Many of the City's economic development efforts are undertaken in partnership with our allies, such as the Mount Holly Community Development Foundation, and area chambers of commerce, including the Mount Holly Chamber, the Gaston Regional Chamber, and the Montcross Chamber. The City of Mount Holly also works closely with the Gaston County Economic Development Commission. Projects are often taken to the Mount Holly Economic Development Committee for review and recommendation to City Council.
Economic Development was listed as a priority, based on community goals outlined in the 2003 Vision Process. In the past decade, the City of Mount Holly dedicated a $3 million Downtown Streetscape Project in 2007, which was supported by a voter-approved, bond referendum. Downtown Mount Holly, once laced with broken, concrete sidewalks and cumbersome, wooden-utility poles, was transformed into a "place to do business," complete with brick sidewalks, granite curbing, decorative light poles, underground utilities, park benches and ornate street trees. In 2008, the City completed an adaptive reuse project by transforming a 60,000 sq. ft., former textile mill into the Municipal Complex, housing City offices, the Police Department, meeting space, and as of January 2013, CaroMont Health's "Discover You" Interactive Healthy Living Center. The City is nearing completion on Phase 2 of the Linear Park Project, the centerpiece of our future greenway system, which will connect Downtown to the Catawba River. The above examples are only a small glimpse of what the City of Mount Holly is doing to grow the economy.
