Mount Holly City Council Releases Adopted 2023 Tax Rate with 16.49% Tax Rate Cut

Mount Holly City Council Releases Adopted 2023 Tax Rate with 16.49% Tax Rate Cut
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mount Holly, NC - The Mount Holly City Council announced the new municipal Tax Rate for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The rate of $0.405 per $100.00 of value is a 16.49% decrease from the previous rate of $0.485, which was the largest percent decrease by any municipality in the County. This rate is the second lowest municipal tax rate in Gaston County.

“At a time when costs are rising all around us, Mount Holly remains committed to cutting costs for residents and businesses,” remarked Mayor Bryan Hough. “Not only is our rate the second lowest in Gaston County and the largest municipal percentage decrease, but our ongoing projects and programming will not be affected by these changes.”

Mount Holly is excited to announce its budget designed to support the City's current operations while facilitating growth and improving public services. This fiscally-responsible approach ensures the smooth functioning of essential services while still allowing for an array of special events, ongoing capital improvements, and enhanced emergency services.

Additionally, the funds enable the City to operate at a high level, providing the capital required to undertake improvements and upgrades that enhance the overall quality of the City. These investments contribute to the efficiency of different departments, enabling them to serve the community more effectively. Moreover, the funds allocated also play a crucial role in providing necessary benefits to City employees.

How was this tax rate developed?

To develop this budget, all City departments categorized their projected expenditures into three distinct categories: essential, non-essential, and capital. City staff created a budgetary framework that allocates resources efficiently and effectively, maximizing the benefits for citizens. A highlight of this budget was increased public safety with the purchase of two fire apparatus’ and addition of 12 firefighter positions. The Mount Holly City Council voted in favor of this tax rate at the June 12th meeting.

How will property owners be impacted by this tax rate?

Each property is valued differently by Gaston County, but with a reduced tax rate by the City the calculation can be made very easily.  For example, the average home value in Mount Holly is $250,000 and the table below shows the City taxes paid for an average home between the old and new rate.  Tax Value Divided by 100, then multiplied by Tax Rate.
